What is Jian Zhan?
Jian Zhan originated over 1,000 years ago in Jianyang, Fujian, China, during the Song Dynasty. These tea bowls were treasured by scholars and emperors for their deep, dark glaze and iron-rich clay that gave them a natural metallic sheen.
In the 12th century, Jian Zhan bowls were brought to Japan by Buddhist monks, where they became known as Tenmoku — now a revered part of Japanese tea culture.
Today, Jian Zhan continues to embody the beauty of chance and tradition, each bowl shaped by fire, clay, and time.

OUR STORY
In 2024, a quiet moment at the British Museum led us to the discovery of ancient Jian Zhan bowls — humble, weathered, yet filled with spirit. Later in Fujian and Jingdezhen, we met the artisans who still shape, glaze, and fire each piece by hand — their fingers thickened by years of work, their craft unchanged by time.
Their hands inspired our name: Fatfinger — a tribute to the makers, the patience, and the beauty born from imperfection.
From the deep, metallic glazes of Jian Zhan to the playful, pastel tones of our panda collection, we celebrate both heritage and imagination. We believe that fine ceramics belong not only in museums but in daily life — for tea, coffee, ice cream, or simply to bring joy to your table.
